But it also wouldn't surprise me if it were true both that: 1) FARC was paid for the release, and 2) McCain knew about it enough in advance to arrange his visit to coincide... Its also possible that McCain didn't know, but URIBE deliberately timed it to be while McCain was there. I didn't follow the coverage of McCain's visit, but only became aware of the hostage rescue/release. So I can't comment on how coverage of his visit might have coincided with the hostage rescue. But I think he would have benefited from a subtle effect of association, of making Colombia look better, which favors his position on the free trade pact. And also the resonance between McCain being a former POW, one of his main credentials constantly paraded in the media, and Betancourt et al as a hostage. I think it would be a very subtle effect. Kind of like: McCain visits Colombia- Ta Da!!! (magic wand) Betancourt and other hostages are released... Well, I am also not 100% convinced it is true either. I’m not sure I believe your theory, but I’m in no position to dispute it either. Suffice it to say that behind many news stories their is probably a lot that we don’t know.
